Frequently asked questions
What is a UTM builder?
A UTM builder adds tracking parameters (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, utm_content) to a URL so your analytics tool can attribute traffic to a specific campaign, channel, or ad. URLyte's builder creates the tagged URL instantly and can also shorten it.
Is this UTM builder free?
Yes — build and copy UTM URLs here with no sign-up. To shorten your campaign links and see clicks grouped by campaign, source, and medium, create a free URLyte account.
What's the difference between this and Google's Campaign URL Builder?
Google's builder only outputs the tagged URL. URLyte also shortens it into a clean branded link and tracks clicks by campaign in your own dashboard — so you don't have to wait for GA or dig through reports.
What do utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign mean?
utm_source is where the traffic comes from (e.g. instagram, newsletter). utm_medium is the marketing channel type (e.g. social, email, cpc). utm_campaign is the specific campaign name (e.g. spring-sale). Source, medium, and campaign are the three most important — term and content are optional.
Do I need UTM tags if I use URLyte short links?
URLyte already tracks clicks, location, and device on every link. UTM tags add campaign-level attribution on top — useful when you run the same link across multiple campaigns or also use Google Analytics.
